Counterfeit medicines are now valued at an estimated $200 billion per year. The WHO has warned against a surge in counterfeiting, and Interpol recently seized €11m of dangerous pharmaceuticals in just 7 days. Reports also suggest that the trade flourished* as COVID-19 disrupted genuine supplies.
Brand owners and converters need to protect patients and brand reputation – and they must also comply with the new EU Falsified Medicine Directive EU, adopted in February 2019. That Directive requires all EU prescription medicines to include safety features and show if outer packaging has been tampered with.
